Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Her father's death as a carnival barker, when Ruth was just a little girl She was required to support the family working both as a cleaner and a server. Ruth was raised in a poor area of Boston Massachusetts where she enrolled in the school. In the midst of only two years in school, Ruth left to pursue an acting profession. There were many hurdles to overcome on her path to success. When she was in New York she was hired to pose for photos for a publication about crime however, no theatre opportunities were offered. The next position she was offered was the "hat check" lady at a club before she gave up and returned to Boston. There, she made ends meet as an usherette throughout the day, and at night performing in the New England Repertory Company, her first regular acting gig. She also studied drama and later graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
